Mountain Safety & Preparation Guide from
Journey Junction Tours and Travel
Safety is the most critical aspect of a Rwenzori expedition. Unlike many other mountains, the Rwenzoris are famous for their wet, muddy, and unpredictable conditions.
Congratulations on choosing to tackle the "Mountains of the Moon." To ensure you have a successful and safe expedition, please review these safety protocols carefully.
1. Altitude & Acclimatization
The highest risk on the mountain is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
"Pole Pole": This is Swahili for "Slowly, Slowly." Our guides will pace the trek to ensure your body adjusts to the thinning air. Never rush ahead of the lead guide.
Hydration: Drink at least 3–4 liters of water daily. Dehydration mimics and worsens altitude sickness.
The "Golden Rule": If you develop symptoms of severe altitude sickness (persistent headache, nausea, loss of coordination), the only cure is descent. Our guides are trained to monitor your condition and will make the call to descend if necessary for your safety.
2. Weather & Cold Management
The Rwenzori environment is famously wet. Hypothermia is a real risk if you get wet and cold simultaneously.
The Layering System: Use moisture-wicking base layers (merino wool or synthetic), insulating mid-layers (fleece), and a high-quality waterproof outer shell (Gore-Tex). Avoid cotton, as it stays wet and drains body heat.
Dry Bagging: Ensure your sleeping bag and spare clothes are packed in waterproof dry bags or heavy-duty plastic liners inside your rucksack.
Keep Your Head & Hands Covered: Most body heat is lost through the head. Always have a warm beanie and waterproof gloves accessible.
3. Specialized Terrain: The Bogs
The Rwenzoris are known for their deep mud and bogs.
Footwear: We recommend high-quality, waterproof leather hiking boots with good ankle support. Many hikers also use wellies (gumboots) for the lower boggy sections your guide can advise when to switch.
Walking Poles: These are essential for testing the depth of the mud and maintaining balance on slippery boardwalks and rocks.
4. Technical Sections & Glaciers
The push to Margherita Peak involves crossing glaciers and some steep rock scrambling.
Follow the Leader: You will be roped up for the glacier crossing. Stay in the exact tracks of your guide to avoid hidden crevasses.
Gear Competency: Before the summit day, your guide will provide a refresher on how to use crampons, harnesses, and ice axes. Pay close attention to these instructions.
5. Health & Nutrition
Fuel Your Body: Even if you lose your appetite at altitude, try to eat the high-carb meals provided by our mountain chefs. Your body needs the energy to produce heat.
Personal Medkit: Carry a small kit with blister plasters (moleskin), pain relief (Ibuprofen), antidiarrheals, and any personal prescriptions.
Water Purification: While we provide boiled/treated water, we recommend carrying your own purification tablets (like Aquatabs) for an extra layer of safety.
Emergency Protocols
Communication: Our lead guides carry radio sets or satellite phones (where possible) and stay in touch with our base office in Kasese.
Evacuation: In the event of a serious injury or illness, we coordinate with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) for stretcher evacuation to the nearest trailhead.
Insurance: Requirement: All trekkers must have comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers high-altitude trekking (up to 6,000m) and emergency helicopter evacuation.
Journey Junction Note: Your safety is our #1 priority. If at any point you feel unwell or unsure about a section of the trail, speak to your guide immediately. We are here to get you to the top and back down safely.
